Pavel Kushnir was a pianist and writer who perished in a Birobidzhan prison colony on July 27th, 2024. He was detained on trumped-up charges of publicly inciting terrorism for posting videos protesting Russia's war against Ukraine on his personal YouTube channel. Only five people were subscribed to Kushnir's channel at the time of his arrest. Birobidzhan Diary is Kushnir's final and most personal text. It blends the daily life of a Philharmonic soloist with sketches from the struggle of a lone antiwar activist - an extremely honest, educated and sensitive person whose fearlessness and convictions turned out to be incompatible with life in Putin's Russia.
