The Odd Side is a collection of poems written by Gennady Kanevsky over the past few years. “It’s all about the poems,” Vladimir Gandelsman writes in the preface. “They are not only free in their use of language, but also speak with substance; they are not only figurative, sensually precise, and associatively unpredictable, but also quite risky, since they sometimes touch on depths accessible only to the author—and even that I am not sure of. But I am certain that this is an absolutely essential quality of a great poet, whose ‘eclipses are not foretold by the calendar.’”
