Daniel Kehlmann's novel about a film director in the Third Reich, about art and power, beauty and barbarism, is a triumph. Lichtspiel shows what literature can do: let truth emerge through invention. One of the greatest in cinema, perhaps the greatest director of his era: G.W. Pabst was shooting in France when the Nazis seized power; fleeing the horrors of the new Germany, he fled to Hollywood. But under the dazzling California sun, the world-famous director suddenly looked like a dwarf. Not even Greta Garbo, whom he had made immortal, could help him. And so, almost without having done anything, Pabst finds himself back in his native Austria, now called Ostmark. The barbaric nature of the regime is felt very clearly by the family that has returned home. But the Minister of Propaganda in Berlin wants the film genius, he won't take no for an answer, and he promises a lot. While Pabst still believes that he can resist the courtship, that he will not submit to any dictatorship but that of art, he has already taken the first step into a situation of hopeless entanglement.
