He is the author of several books: All the Kremlin's Men, The Empire Must Die, All are Free, and War and Punishment. His newest book, The Dark Side of the Earth, is a deeply personal reconstruction of the Soviet Union's final thirty years, chronicling its journey from the start of the Space Age and the Soviet empire's zenith to stagnation and, finally, perestroika, a series of crises and collapse.
